SUMMARY: This movie explains the biology of enzymes. Enzymes are protein catalysts that accelerate chemical reactions by lowering activation energy, playing a crucial role in processes like digestion and metabolism in all organisms. They bind to substrates at their active site, facilitating the transformation of reactants into products, and their function depends on factors like pH and temperature. However, changes in these environmental conditions can denature enzymes, reducing or destroying their activity, making them essential but sensitive players in biological systems.

My hope is that this video will catalyze lots of learning.

Enzymes LYRICS:
They're the protein catalysts in every organism
ENZYMES!
Through enzymatic action your metabolism's driven
ENZYMES!
In staphylococcus, jellyfish, tarantulas and trees,
They lower activation energy
Enzymes, in you and me now
ENZYMES!

You got 'em in your cells where they do cellular digestion,
ENZYMES!
You got 'em in your mouth and in your stomach and intestines
ENZYMES!
The thing an enzyme acts upon is called a substrate.
They fit like lock and key with complementary shape
Enzymes, speed up reaction rates
ENZYMES!

An enzyme binds its substrate at its active site
ENZYMES!
Bound together in a complex where they snuggle so tight,
ENZYMES!
New bonds will form and break due to the active site's chemistry
Reactants become products, it's the enzyme's specialty,
Product gets release enzyme repeats its action readily
ENZYMES!

Like any molecule an enzyme's shape defines its function.
ENZYMES!
Environmental change that changes shape leads to malfunction,
ENZYMES!
Every enzyme has a pH where it catalyzes best,
a pH change will set enzyme activity to rest.
Enzymes are so sensitive they're easily upset
ENZYMES!

More heat until a certain point increases their efficiency
ENZYMES!
But too much heat denatures them destroying their activity
ENZYMES!
That's why a fever running high's a dangerous situation,
All that heat can alter enzymatic conformation.
Keep it 98.6 for enzyme optimization
ENZYMES!

Enzymes in saliva will break starch into glucose
ENZYMES!
If you lack the enzyme lactase then you won't enjoy milk lactose,
ENZYMES!
Tay-sachs, galactosemia and PKU disease,
All caused by inherited enzyme deficiencies
ENZYMES, they're what everybody needs
ENZYMES!

NUCLEUS:
Welcome to the plant cell
time to introduce
I’m the nucleus
I run this clique
you know I got the juice
an envelope has got my back
I’m the #1 OG
which is short for “Organelle”
So let’s meet the family!

CELL WALL:
First up the cell wall
Here’s to tell y’all
I hold the cell up so it don’t fall
I stand tall
keep us shaped up
square so we don’t look whack
‘cuz you know plant cells
are stacked on stacks of stacks...

CELL MEMBRANE
And if you wanna get in
I maintain
you gotta get past me
Who? The cell membrane!
Regulating what comes out and goes in
like a door man
I’m letting all my bros in

We are the parts of the plant cell
this flow gets growing and we represent well
getting energy from rays of light
making mitosis by the end of the night
we are the parts of the pant cell, yeah!

MITOCHONDRIA:
Can I go next?

NUCLEUS:
Hold up mitochondria — you’re the powerhouse of the cell, man, they aint ready for you!

MITOCHONDRIA:
Awww, okay…

NUCLEUS:
E.R. — hit us with that fire!

ENDOPLASMIC RETICULUM:
Last name: Reticulum
First: Endoplasmic
Haven’t heard of me? Well
That’s tragic
Moving proteins from one spot to another
They’re made by ribosomes

NUCLEUS:
Who dat?

ENDOPLASMIC RETICULUM:
My baby brother!

CHLOROPLAST:
Woah woah!
slow your roll
Hand on the mic, I’m in control
No need to move so fast
‘cuz now
you’re dealing with the chloroplast!
Got a nice fat sack of chlorophyll
so looks like it’s about time time to get chill
sun rays beat down like a sizzle
so Photosynthesizzle what I do fo’ rizzle

We are the parts of the plant cell
this flow gets growing and we represent well
getting energy from rays of light
making mitosis by the end of the night
we are the parts of the pant cell, yeah!

MITOCHONDRIA:
Ok NOW can I go?

NUCLEUS:
Ok Mitochondria, go for it!

MITOCHONDRIA:
Alright, just need to take a quick breath first…

MITOCHONDRIA:
I gotta move quick
I gotta move fast
In the plant cell clique
with Chloroplast
We work together, see?
Photosynthesis to energy
I make it look easy
So run & tell that & don’t step to me
I’m the finest MC
in the microscopic nation
take a deep breath
call that cell respiration
powerhouse
I power up
My engine drives that flower up
Not bragging, just to tell ya
Zinnia to Azelia, Photosynthesis won't fail ya!

We are the parts of the plant cell
this flow gets growing and we represent well
getting energy from rays of light
making mitosis by the end of the night
we are the parts of the pant cell, yeah!

A NOTE ABOUT COPYRIGHT: A Capella Science parodies are covered under fair dealing in Canadian law and fair use under American law. Unfortunately for me though, YouTube is mostly governed in practice by agreements between YouTube, the creators, and the record labels. To keep from being sued YouTube gives very generous powers to big labels like EMI, Sony BMG, etc, which include automated copyright claiming and final say in the event of a dispute. I've tried to fight claims in the past but always hit a brick wall, so those videos that are monetized on my channel are monetized as "revenue sharing cover songs". Overall my income from the channel, purely from ads, is about 55 cents per thousand views--normal CPM is anywhere from 2-5 dollars, so I'm making somewhere between 1/4 and 1/10 of normal. Luckily I also have an incredibly generous community, and with the help of my patrons (along with private gigs) I can keep this channel going!

----LYRICS---

Cause I I I got the SARS tonight
So watch me ring up my blood cells of white

First up
Coming through the blood
Neutrophil come slow your roll
Eat up micro bods
Gummed up when your guts explode
Hang tight waiting monocyte
Hulk out til you're chowing em down
Signals from my killer cells
And those weak and infected go "blao"

This is getting heavy
Better get the lymph nodes all ready
Got a fever running
And these signal cytokines flooding
Defense overrun
we need to send a sample on
Dendritic, you gotta go off
so let's go!

Cause I I I got the SARS tonight
So watch me bring peptides to the meeting site
Fly into the lymph node with the details of the bug
So I can fight it off by leukocyte

Bring a friend, join the crowd
Together filling up the node
New white lymphocytes
Of the thymus and the bone
Scatter-gun, million-to-one
Which ones are compatible?
"Ladies and gentlemen
I got the antigen
So you can keep your eyes on the ball"

This is getting heavy
Can we get T's trained already
Helping, teaching, gunning
Plasma cells with antibods flooding
These made optimal
We need to save a sample of
Archive em, y'all others go off
And let's go

Cause I I I got the SARS tonight
So watch me bring trained cells to the battle site
Target a specific set of features of the bug
So I can fight it off by leukocyte

Slide through the side to find the right site of the fight
Fight it leukocyte
Fly like a guided viricide bind to the site
Fight it leukocyte
Target cells exhibiting a feature of the bug
So I can fight it off by leukocyte

Die for the tribe deny the shock play
Try and imbibe a fly-by-night prey
Pry, nullify the viral home bay
Fight it off leukocyte

Spy to provide a vital dossier
Vie to supply the binding Y shape
Scry, then apply a cytokine aide
Fight it off leukocyte

Cause I I I got the SARS tonight
So watch me bring all guns to the firefight
Target tainted tissue with a team to SWAT the bug
So I can fight it off by leukocyte

Cause I I I got the SARS tonight
So watch me bring the fire to the parasite
Integrated synergy to seek and squash the bug
So I can fight it off by leukocyte

Guide what survived to multiply righting the blight
Right it leukocyte
Time to resign, the high supply cost to requite
Bite it leukocyte
But I will keep this memory with features of the bug
So I can fight it off by leukocyte

Cell Theory/ Part of a Cell Song. Here is a video I created for my 6th grade science students to help them study.I hope you enjoy.
Hook saw small rooms
Or pores, or Cells that look dividing
Inside all Cells
Organelles float in Cytoplasm

In all Plant Cells
The outside is a Wall

Around the Cell
Is like a skin the Cellular Membrane
Its job is to
Let particles go out, in, out, in

Chloroplasts help plants to capture energy
For Photosynthesis

Chorus

Looking inside Cells
They are the things that make up life
Cell Theory's amazing
Cells from other Cells
All living things
The whole world's made from basic Cells
Cell Theory's amazing
Cells from other Cells

The Nucleus
Is like the major control center
Nuclear Membrane
Has pores to only let in some things

Inside's the Chromatin
Genetic instructions

Nucleolus is a structure
Where Ribosomes are made
Protein is sent to the
Endoplasmic Reticulum

The Golgi Bodies package
The material
And send it around

Chorus

Mitocondria
Is a rod shaped powerhouse of the cell
It produces energy
For functions to carry out
Then there's Vacuoles
Storage for food and H2O
And then Lysosomes
That break food pieces down

All Living things
Are composed of cells
The basic unit
Cells from other Cells

Chorus

Looking inside Cells
They are the things that make up life
Cell Theory's amazing
Cells from other Cells
All living things
The whole world's made from basic Cells
Cell Theory's amazing
Cells from other Cells

Yeah!

EDIT: Lyrics can be found below.
This is 'Chromosome', the educational parody of Lady Gaga's 'Telephone' music video. It is a project that I directed this summer in the hopes of making science fun and interesting for students. Thank you to all of my talented friends for helping make this video possible! I hope you enjoy it and remember everyone, science is fun!

Lyrics:
Hello? Hello? Baby, you called. I can't hear a thing.
I have got not service in the laboratory.
I have got no time for talking. Baby, can't you see?
I am trying to study some biochemistry.

When the chromosomes condense then we call it prophase.
And when they line up then it is called metaphase.
When they pull apart then we call it anaphase.
And when they divide into two cells that is telophase.

Stop calling. Stop calling. I don't wanna talk anymore.
I have a test that I am studying for.

GTACCCGTAGT
Neucleotides are
CATGGGATCA
They go
TACATGTCT
Neucleotides are
ACTTCGGAATA

DNA wrapped around histones.
It's all in the chromosome.
Everything in your genome:
It's all in the chromosome.

And when those cells explode they call it apoptosis.
Different than necrosis. Not caused by osmosis.
It's dangerous when the cell begin undergoing anoikis.
Then there's metastasis. Cell death is so tasteless.

DNA is simple if at first you only think,
That you have a purine paired with a pyrimidine.
The sugar-phosphate backbone holds all the bases
Which is twisted around like a spiral staircase.

Copying, copying like in vivo but much faster.
I got my genes from the lab thermocycler.

DNA Song. Here is a song I made for a student to help the study. I hope you enjoy!
Here we go, genetic code, determines how you live
Oh size, shape, color and all makes you who you is
You should know the chromosomes has thousands of genes
A T and G C makes types of proteins
During synthesis, the cell uses info
From a gene on a chromosome
Out in the cytoplasm and on the ribosomes
Info needs to get out the nucleus

It's the DNA, in ya
It's the genetic code, in ya
Paring Nitrogen bases, in ya
The double helix ladder, in ya
Oohh
Adenine goes with Thymine
And Guanine pairs with Cytosine
Matched pairs of DNA, bases
How cells produce proteins
Ooh, no, no, no

Send, send, send the code out to the cytoplasm
This genetic messenger is ribonucleic acid
RNA, DNA, differ in many ways, yeah
RNA molecules look like one side or strand

Ribonucleic acid has a different sugar
Has uracil instead of thymine
Messenger RNA sends info out to the cytoplasm
Transfer adds amino acids to proteins

It's the DNA, in ya
It's the genetic code, in ya
Paring Nitrogen bases, in ya
The double helix ladder, in ya
Oohh
Adenine goes with Thymine
And Guanine pairs with Cytosine
Matched pairs of DNA, bases
How cells produce proteins

Messenger RNA production
Ooh, attaches to a ribosome
Transfer attaches to messenger
Ribosome releases, the completed protein chain

But don't you know it's the DNA, in ya
It's the genetic code, in ya
Paring Nitrogen bases, in ya
The double helix ladder, in ya
Oooh
Adenine goes with Thymine
And Guanine pairs with Cytosine
Matched pairs of DNA, bases
How cells produce proteins

Yeah, how cells make proteins
It's in the DNA
Ooh how cells make proteins
No, no, no, no

⁣Here is a song I created to help my 6th grade students study. I hope you enjoy.

Bladder balloon-like sac
Storing up urine in the pelvis socket
The, the, the kidneys filtering your blood out
The urinary system

Now, body taking in food like, "What up I got a Big Mac!"
You're so filled up by some food in your stomach
Used for repair and for your energy
Your body needs "Man there's some junk ain't needed"
Nutrients going deep, waste products not to keep
Urinary works with lungs and the skin, intestines
All of which rid the waste, keeping balanced chemicals
Only keep what body needs, body will release this...

But it's a quart and a half each day (roughly)

Depends on drinking on, lost in sweat and how you're breathing in
Taking in of medications makes the total amount of the urine
Eating up protein, vegetables
Urea in blood to kidneys
Bean shaped organs near the middle of your back rib cage
Remove urea from blood, removes urea from blood
No for real, ask your Grandpa filtering with the nephrons (Thank You)
Each nephron capillaries-glomerulus
And a small tube called the renal tubule
Water waste substance urea waste substance
Urine it is forming, in nephrons and the tubules
Thin tubes, thin tubes, ureters to bladder
Urine moving ureters 8-10 inches long
Muscles they will tighten, in the walls, moves downward
Small amounts of urine emptied into the bladder

Bladder balloon-like sac
Storing up urine in the pelvis socket
The, the, the kidneys filtering your blood out
The urinary system

Bladder balloon-like sac
Storing up urine in the pelvis socket
The, the, the kidneys filtering your blood out
The urinary system

What you know about a hollow muscle this organ
What you know about your bladder balloon-like thing
It's storing, it's storing urine inside like luggage
It's just trash 'til your body will go, empty
Thank your bladder for holding urine two cups inside it
Holds tight for some 2-5 hours
Circular muscles and you can call them the sphincters
Yeah, that sphincters help to keep all the urine from leaking
Close tightly, not lightly, opening urethra
They pinch the urine from escaping
Rubber bands keeping waste from p****ing
The nerves in bladder tells your body when to use the restroom
To use the potty or the "loo" or head to urinate in
You be like "Oh that toilet, that's hella tight"
Your like "Yo, I feel the urge to urinate"

Feeling the sensation let's do some addition
Bladder it continues filling, that's just when it's reached it's limit
You feel that urge to let it go hurtin'
The nerves they telling your brain, "Do your business"
Your bladder is hurting, yo
And when going number one the brain send signals to all the muscles holding-don't
Squeezing bladder muscles like a stress ball
And as these muscles relax then urine goes
Urine going through

Urethra, Urinate, Yeah!

Bladder balloon-like sac
Storing up urine in the pelvis socket
The, the, the kidneys filtering your blood out
The urinary system

To balance chemicals
It is incredible
Urinary system
From kidneys down to sphincter
To balance chemicals
It is incredible
Urinary system
From kidneys down to Sphincter

Bladder balloon-like sac
Storing up urine in the pelvis socket
The, the, the kidneys filtering your blood out
The urinary system

Perhaps your bladder is full?
